The three leading women and prominent Olympians of the LA 2024 Candidature Committee today heralded 2016 as "a year for women leaders in sport." US IOC Members Anita DeFrantz and Angela Ruggiero, and LA 2024 Director of Athlete Relations Janet Evans each stressed the importance of recognizing and encouraging a leading role for women across the Olympic Movement in 2016 and beyond.
DeFrantz, Ruggiero and Evans are each playing a key role in LA’s candidature to bring the Olympic and Paralympic Games back to the U.S. for the first time in 28 years. Between them, the trio have 10 Olympic medals and more than 50 years of cumulative experience at the highest level of sports administration, bringing a wealth of expertise to LA 2024’s candidature.
Following the outstanding success of leading female athletes in Olympic sports in 2015, such as Serena Williams and Katie Ledecky (both USA), Jessica Ennis-Hill (GBR) and Genzebe Dibaba (ETH), LA 2024 believes that the Olympic and Paralympic year of 2016 will bring even greater successes and opportunities for women in sport.
IOC Executive Board Member and Honorary Member of the IOC Women in Sport Commission Anita DeFrantz said: "2015 was a very successful year for women in sport. We have seen many extraordinary achievements on and off the field of play, and that is set to continue in this Olympic and Paralympic year. There is also a rise in the number of prominent women administrators in sport but, as Olympic Agenda 2020 highlights, there is still more that can be done in this regard.
"As President of the LA84 Foundation, I worked to ensure that one of the legacies from LA’s Games in 1984 was to ensure greater gender equality in sport throughout the USA. And I'm sure that at Rio 2016 we will see the Olympic Movement take a step closer to its goal of achieving 50% participation of women in the Olympic Games."
IOC Member and Vice-Chair of the IOC Athletes’ Commission Angela Ruggiero said: "As a proud member of the IOC Athletes’ Commission, I know how important it is for current and retired athletes, and Olympians and Paralympians in particular, to serve as role models to inspire more females to participate and lead in sport. The Olympic and Paralympic Games have an unrivaled power to help achieve this and so I really look forward to Rio 2016."
LA 2024 Vice Chair and Director of Athlete Relations Janet Evans added: "LA 2024 is strongly committed to advancing the IOC’s goal of fostering gender equality and strengthening women’s participation in, and through, sport. Most recently, I was thrilled to welcome Olympian Tamara Christopherson to the team as LA 2024’s Associate Director of Athlete Relations. Tamara’s experience and knowledge is emblematic of the huge pool of talented current and retired athletes that train and reside in California and the U.S. We will be looking to harness all of that talent as we build LA 2024's Athletes’ Commission."
