The European Olympic Committees (EOC) today announced that Doctor Klaus Steinbach has been appointed as EOC Chief Medical Officer for the inaugural European Games in Baku, Azerbaijan, in 2015.

An Olympic silver medallist at the 1972 Munich Games and a bronze medallist at the 1976 Montreal Games in swimming, Steinbach qualified as a Doctor in 1983 and went on to specialise in orthopedics and physical and rehabilitative medicine.

Dr. Steinbach is a former President of Germany’s National Olympic Committee and also served as his nation’s Chef de Mission at Sydney 2000, Athens 2004 and Torino 2006.

Dr. Steinbach said:

"I am delighted to take up this senior role with the European Olympic Committees and am looking forward to starting work with the medical team at Baku 2015 as soon as possible.

"It is very stimulating to be involved in an emerging sports event like the European Games and I am honoured to have been given overall responsibility for the welfare of the 5,000 athletes expected to compete."

Dr. Steinbach will attend the third EOC Baku 2015 Coordination Commission meeting in Baku on 3-4 April 2014 as well as the Baku 2015 Chefs de Mission Seminar on 10-12 June.

Patrick Hickey, EOC President, said:

"The value of Klaus’s experience is three-fold. He is a former athlete, he is a doctor with more than 25 years’ experience and he has been a Chef de Mission at major sports events like the Olympic Games.

"The EOC’s role is to service the needs of our 49 member countries and their athletes and Klaus’s appointment shows how seriously we are taking their welfare at the first ever European Games in Baku."

Dr. Steinbach retired from swimming in 1980 having also won 25 national German titles, five European titles, was World Champion in 1975 and set nine European records.
