(ATR) The most followed person on the social media site, Twitter, and global superstar, Katy Perry, announced the release of her new song "Rise" on Twitter yesterday which will be used in NBC’s coverage of the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio beginning in Aug.
This will be Katy Perry’s latest music since the release of her last album, "Prism" which included other inspirational music such as "Roar" and "Fireworks".
"Rise" will not be the only anthem for this year’s Olympics. Rio has also released its official theme song, "Alma e Coração" (Soul and Heart) performed by Thiaquinho, also featuring rapper Projota, both natives of Sao Paulo, Brazil.Theme music for the Olympic Games dates back to the 1890s when the first Olympic Hymn was created. Most are familiar with the classics such as, "The Bugler’s Dream" used in ABC’s coverage of the 1968 Winter Olympic Games and "One moment in time" sang by Whitney Houston during the 1988 Summer Olympic Games in Seoul.
Taking a look back into Atlanta’s Olympic musical history, during the 1996 games, Reach" by Gloria Estefan was used as the official theme song. Gladys Knight sang "Georgia on My Mind", Georgia's official state song, at the opening ceremony and Celine Deon’s "Power of Dreams" concluded the games.
The Opening Ceremony of the 2016 Rio Olympics will air on Friday, Aug. 5, on NBC and conclude on Sunday, Aug. 21.
