MADRID, August 7, 2014 – Spain and Manchester United football star Juan Mata is to be Patron of a new scholarship, supported by the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, at the University Camilo José Cela in Madrid, which will help the education of a student with limited resources.
Mata, an Ambassador of the Laureus Foundation Spain, who studied Science of Physical Activity and Sport at the university, said: "For me it´s a privilege to be the ‘godfather’ of an initiative like this. I believe that to join education and sport together is always positive and can help improve our society. I hope this scholarship helps to achieve this."
From the beginning of the next school year, a semi-professional athlete with limited personal resources will now have the chance of continuing his academic career in the prestigious university.
Gabriel Masfurroll, President of the Laureus Foundation in Spain, said: "We are delighted to collaborate with an institution as important in the education world as the University Camilo José Cela. It fills me with pride to be able to start up this new joint project with the support of one Spain’s best football players, Juan Mata. This agreement opens up the possibility of helping many more young people who need it."
The University Camilo José Cela is outstanding for its work with sport, both for professionals and amateurs, and is known as the ‘University of Sports’. In 2013 it received the National Sports Award - the ‘Joaquín Blume Award’.
Eduardo Nolla, Dean of the University Camilo José Cela, said: "For us, as an education entity, it is essential to get our students close to the values of dedication, overcoming problems and work that sport represents and that the Laureus Foundation spreads. We are convinced we will do many projects together."
The Laureus Foundation in Spain works every day to help improve the lives of hundreds of children and young adults through the use of sport. The two organisations hope to start new initiatives based on the values inherent in sport to encourage a healthy lifestyle, to encourage integration and combat social exclusion.
