(ATR) Jason Sudeikis and Oscar-winning actor Jeremy Irons have joined the cast for "Race," a film about 1936 Berlin Olympic Games gold medalist Jesse Owens.
Emmy winner Stephen Hopkins is directing the movie. The Wrapreports filming will begin on July 24 in Montreal and on location at Berlin's Olympiastadion.
Owens won four gold medals at the Games. His performancedefied Adolf Hitler’s platform of Aryan racial supremacy. Hitler had used the Games as a platform for Nazi propaganda.
Newcomer Stephan James will portray Olympian Jesse Owens in the drama. Sudeikis will play Owens' coach Larry Snyder and Irons will play American Olympic Committee president Avery Brundage.
Brundage pushed for Berlin to host the 1936 Summer Games and later became the fifth IOC President in 1952.
"Race," written by Anna Waterhouse and Joe Shrapnel, will focus on Owens’ road to the 1936 Games and how he overcame opposition both on and off the track.
"This was a story waiting to be made for nearly 80 years," Mister Smith Entertainment CEO David Garrett told The Wrap in a statement. Mister Smith Entertainment is handling worldwide sales for the biopic.
Focus Features acquired the U.S. distribution rights for the biopic this week.
