(ATR) The Japanese government announced new goals on Tuesday to boost the country’s preparedness for natural disasters for 2020.
Japan aims to have 95 percent of homes be earthquake resistant by 2020 - up from 75 percent currently - and also reduce the area of dense wooden homes.
By 2018, the country hopes to have 6,000 emergency fire response teams, up from 4,600 currently.
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told his ministers to "powerfully promote related measures both in terms of hardware and software," according to Kyodo News International.
Tokyo aims to promote its disaster preparedness efforts ahead of the Olympics in 2020, as well as the proposed magnetically levitated train from Tokyo to Nagoya. That project is expected to be completed in 2027.
