World-famous actor/pop-star/icon Jackie Chan was at the BeijingGehua New Century Hotel yesterday afternoon for the release of 10 Beijing 2022 Bidsongs, including his own "Wake Up Winter." Joined by Vice Mayor of Beijing andExecutive Vice President of the Beijing 2022 Bid Committee Zhang Jiandong, as well asBeijing Olympic City Development Association (BODA) Vice Chairman Jiang Xiaoyu,Jackie Chan discussed the song’s twin messages of spreading world peace through thepromotion of Olympic values and sustaining the flames of China’s newfound passion forwinter sports. Addressing the audience, Jackie Chan explained the lyrics of the song:‘The World is Different and Yet All the Same’," he sang before saying: "‘Wake Up Winter’is a testament to how both sport and music have the power to inspire us all, no matterwhat cultural background we may come from. I am very proud to present this as mycontribution to the Beijing 2022 Bid!"
"Wake Up Winter" is one of ten invited musical selections for Beijing’s Bid for the 2022Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games: The lyrics, written by renowned ChineseOlympic songwriter Wang Pingjiu – marking his second collaboration with Mr. Chan onan Olympics song after Beijing 2008’s "Welcome to Beijing!" — expand upon anunderstanding of Olympism and winter sports culture from a Chinese perspective whileexpressing an earnest desire to see a Winter Olympics hosted in Beijing. "Wake UpWinter" composer Zhao Jialin also helped to write Chinese viral track "Little Apple".
Aside from Jackie Chan’s "Wake Up Winter", other songs released in support of the bidare "A Dance of Ice and Snow," "Beijing," "Reunited," "A Call for Love," "Heart,""Pursuing a Dream of Snow," "To Never Admit Defeat," "Wish," and "Come Ski on theGreat Wall," featuring contributions from other Chinese celebrities such as Sun Nan, TanJing, David Zee Tao, Chang Shilei, and the young heartthrob Lu Han.
While making remarks at the release, BODA Vice Chairman Jiang Xiaoyu said: "The factthat we have such young composers and world-renowned singers working togetherreflects both the youthful and international nature of support behind the Beijing 2022bid. It is the new generation of China’s teenagers and youngsters that feel winter sportspassion most fervently; therefore, it is no surprise to me that most of the singers andsongwriters behind these pieces are those popular with the country’s youngeraudiences."
After the music’s release, Vice Chairman of BODA Jiang Xiaoyu presented Jackie Chanwith official certification of his role as a Beijing 2022 Bid Music Consultant, thanking himfor his "years of support in the promotion of the Olympic Movement in China throughmusic performance." In response, Jackie Chan said: "As a pop singer who understandsthe power of music, and an ordinary Chinese who has tried my best ever since Beijing’sfirst Olympic bid back in 1993, I want to urge everyone to support Beijing’s Bid for the2022 Olympic Winter Games by sharing this song."
