The International Triathlon Union, in consultation with the Italian Federation, the Milan 2020 organising committee and the local authorities, has taken the decision to move the 2020 ITU Paratriathlon World Championships, planned for May 2, to the city of Montreal. The decision comes as the COVID-19 Coronavirus outbreak spreads in many regions, making it impossible for the local organisers to go ahead with the event as planned.

The 2020 Paratriathlon World Championships will be held in Montreal in the last week of June, still within the Paralympic Qualification period. The ITU Executive Board has also approved to move the Arzachena World Cup, also in Italy, to October 2020.

Travel restrictions and quarantines imposed by some countries and airlines for individuals and groups travelling to or from areas affected by the outbreak make it impossible to go ahead with the Milan Paratriathlon World Champs in the planned dates, but all stakeholders are working tirelessly against the clock to find a new date to host the event, keeping always the health and safety of all athletes, coaches, officials, volunteers and staff as the first priority.

ITU wants to express its gratitude to the Montreal World Triathlon Series organisers, for their willingness to allocate the event on record time. And we also want to express the full support to the Italian organisers, Federation and local athletes, with whom we will continue to work to try to find a suitable date for a paratriathlon event during the season.

The International Triathlon Union is the world governing body for the Olympic sport of Triathlon and all related MultiSport disciplines including Duathlon, Aquathlon, Cross Triathlon and Winter Triathlon.
