Madrid, Spain (13 November 2013) - The International Triathlon Union (ITU) today announced the appointment of Antonio Fernandez Arimany as its new Director General. Arimany has served as the ITU Legal, Finance and Administrative Director since 2010, during which time he was charged with overseeing all economic and legal responsibilities within the organisation.
"While we interviewed excellent candidates for the position, Antonio's extensive experience in the Olympic movement combined with his knowledge of triathlon, as well as expertise in finance and law, made him an excellent choice for the position," said ITU President and IOC Member Marisol Casado. "I'm confident Antonio will continue to positively impact ITU, as he has already done in the last three years."
In Arimany's new role, he will act as the top administrator and manager of ITU. In this position, he will work with the Executive Board to set the strategic direction of ITU and will report directly to the ITU President, Marisol Casado. As the operational leader of the organisation, Arimany will be tasked with advising Casado and the Executive Board, challenging the employees, and driving entrepreneurial innovation.
In his time with ITU, Arimany's major achievements include minimizing legal expenses, establishing offices in Madrid and Lausanne, and creating a legal advisory liaison for Continental Federations.
Additionally, Arimany has more than 10 years' experience in both the athletic and finance industries, which includes a PhD in environmental taxation, as well as Business and Law degrees. Prior to joining ITU, he worked for the Athens Olympics Organising Committee and later served as the Managing Director of Madrid's bid for the 2016 Olympic Games.
Arimany will move into his new role beginning 1 December, 2013.
