Istanbul Observes Youth & Sports Day
Istanbul 2020 touts Youth and Sports Day as another milestone for the Olympics bid.
State ceremonies and sports events held Sunday in the Turkish city celebrated Youth and Sports Day. This globally recognized national holiday has promoted athletic and healthy lifestyles for Istanbul’s youth since 1938.
Attendees took part in a wide array of Olympic and Paralympic sports. Over 2,000 participants of all ages ran in the Istanbul 2020 sponsored fun run, encompassing a 6km branded course.
"Istanbul 2020 aims to realise the full potential of Turkey’s 31 million people under 25 through mass sport participation and structured education and entrepreneurial programs," Istanbul 2020 Chairman Hasan Arat said in a statement.
"Istanbul 2020 will be a bridge to a new generation of connected global citizens and young leaders in sport, business, engineering, the media and volunteering."
To contribute to the day’s festivities, Turkish Minister of Youth and Sports Suat Kılıç put finishing touches on a record-breaking 12,000 square-meter mural. Around 250 students participated in creating the painting.
Tokyo and Madrid are the other 2020 bid cities.
Buenos Aires Hosts Karate Champs
Buenos Aires 2018 says the recent Pan-American Karate Championships reinforced its bid for the Youth Olympic Games.
The 2013 Pan-American Karate Championships ran from May 13 to 18 in Buenos Aires with Argentina finishing third overall. Franco Icasati, captain of the Argentinean team, publicly supported the country’s YOG bid throughout the event.
"We are very proud of our record of hosting major events like the Senior Pan-American Karate Championships and this is further proof of our distinguished hosting capabilities," Buenos Aires 2018 CEO Francisco Irarrazaval said in a statement.
"We believe that hosting the YOG in 2018 would provide us with the opportunity to positively impact upon a generation of young people’s lives by embedding the values of Olympism and ultimately creating the next generation of Olympic champions."
Buenos Aires featured a sports venue located in its ‘Green Corridor’ throughout the Pan-American Karate Championships, which is also the projected venue for the badminton and handball competitions in its 2018 YOG Bid Plan.
Glasgow; Medellin, Colombia and Rotterdam, Netherlands are the other cities vying for the YOG.
Glasgow Bid Urged
A member of the Scottish Parliament has urged Glasgow to bid for the 2021 World Masters Games.
Bob Doris wrote a letter to the head of the Glasgow City Council and Scottish sports minister saying the 2014 Commonwealth Games laid a solid foundation for a bid.
"The Commonwealth Games next year will be a great opportunity to bring investment to Glasgow, upgrade our sport facilities, encourage physical activity, and broadcast a positive image of the city to the world," Doris wrote in the letter according to reports in Scottish media.
"This legacy would be reinforced if the city is successful in its current bid for the 2018 Youth Olympics.
"Achieving the hat trick by hosting the World Masters Games in 2021 would cement our position on the world map as a sporting city."
