The logo for the Chicago 2016 bid cannot contain the torch image, the IOC has ruled. (ATR) A Chicago 2016 official leader tells Around the Rings that a new logo for the Olympic bid is being created now that the IOC has sent notice that the torch-inspired design is outside the rules.

First reported by the Chicago Tribune, Chicago 2016 officials confirm they received notification this week that the logo cannot contain the image of a torch.

Chicago 2016 spokesman Mike Kontos tells Around the Rings that the bid “sought clarification of whether our logo was in synch with the rules going forward into the next phase. This week, we received notice that indeed we would have to make appropriate changes.”

“We will abide by the rules in this upcoming phase as we did those in the previous one and change the logo as appropriate,” he says, adding that a new logo is now in the process of development.

Under the rules of the campaign, bid city logos “shall not contain the Olympic symbol, the Olympic motto, the Olympic flag, any other Olympic-related imagery (e.g. flame, torch, medal, etc.), slogan, designation or other indicia or the distorted version thereof or a design confusingly similar thereto”.

Among the cities around the world in the race for the 2016 Olympics, Chicago is the only one of the group with a logo. The design was unveiled in November and has been used on banners, apparel and pins.

The logo is still in use on at chicago2016.org, but Kontos says as the transition is made to the next phase of the campaign, the old symbol will be removed.

The rules for bid city logo designs are included in the seven-page code of conduct covering the 2016 race published in February.

Today marks the official start of the campaign for 2016 with the IOC declaring open the application period for the race. National Olympic committees have until September 15 to nominate a city.

Those cities which apply will be subject to an initial round of scrutiny by IOC experts. Their report will be submitted to the IOC Executive Board next year which will decide on which of the cities will be permitted to submit formal bids.

The IOC decision on the 2016 host city will be made at the session in Copenhagen on October 2, 2009.
