IOC Receives Cities' Bid Documents

The International Olympic Committee have confirmed they have received the final set of bid documents from cities bidding to stage the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Budapest, Los Angeles and Paris met the February 3rd deadline to send their documents to IOC headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland, and will now prepare for the ‘international’ phase of the process when they will begin to campaign across the globe for support.

Terre des Hommes, through its campaign Children Win, has been campaigning for child rights requirements to be included in the Host City Contracts for the Olympics in order to avoid the repetition of violations witnessed at Rio 2016 and in previous Games and organize Olympic Games that do not harm at increased risk and leave a positive legacy .

The current bidding process has not been without setbacks, with Hamburg withdrawing in November 2015 following a referendum, and Rome’s bid collapsing last year due to the newly-elected Mayor of the city withdrawing support.

Even over the last few weeks, more controversy has followed with Budapest’s bid being overshadowed by the call for another public referendum on whether a city should stage the Games. A Hungarian youth organisation has led the ‘NOlimpia’ campaign and secured almost half the signatures required to force the referendum, and a poll has suggested 68% of people in the city oppose staging the Games.

In the United States, newly-elected President, Donald Trump, announced a temporary travel ban on citizens arriving from seven countries which are principally Muslim. This could seriously damage Los Angeles’ bid to stage the 2024 Games.

The IOC was criticised for initially failing to speak out against the ban, which clearly contravenes Olympic ideals. It later welcomed comments from US Olympic leaders who said they had been reassured by Government that athletes and officials from all countries would have access to the US.

As the bid teams prepare for the international phase of the campaign, Paris took the opportunity of this turbulent period for its rivals by announcing it would introduce a plan to support refugees through sport, in particular Taekwondo. However France itself faces an uncertain time ahead with Presidential elections in May.

The hosts for the 2024 Olympics will be announced on September 13 in Lima, Peru.
