IOC President Heads Home from Pacific

(ATR) IOC President Thomas Bach ends his island-hopping in the Pacific with a stop in Guam.

(ATR) IOC President Thomas Bach closes a three-island journey in the Pacific with a stop in Guam.

The IOC president arrived in the U.S. territory Friday after stops in Palau and Papua New Guinea.

The visits are the first Bach has made to the these islands as IOC president.

Bach met with members of the Guam National Olympic Committee and took a tour of Guam sport venues.

Bach flew to Guam on a private jet. He was accompanied by IOC director of NOC relations James MacLeod, IOC deputy director Pere Miro and media chief Mark Adams.

Guam National Olympic Committee president Ricardo Blas was part of the welcoming delegation when Back arrived Friday evening.

"To have greatpeople welcome him; the governor, first gentleman, and entourage of government support basically demonstrates Guam's welcome to the president of the IOC," Blas is quoted by Pacific Daily News.

Two days ago Bach met with young athletes at the Taurama Aquatic & Indoor Centre in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.

The center is a legacy of the Pacific Games in 2015 and trains thousands of young athletes.from PNG.

Bach met with young fencers while he was visiting the center. Bach won a gold medal in fencing in the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal and shared his knowledge and expertise with the youngsters.

IOC member and NOC secretary general Auvita Rapilla was on hand to accompany Bach in PNG.

Bach heads to Hong Kong May 11, the last stop on the journey back to IOC headquarters in Lausanne.
