(ATR) Twenty-three medalists are among 45 athletes to test positive for banned drugs after a second wave of retests from the London and Beijing Olympics.
The IOC said on Friday that the medalists in four sports were among 30 athletes caught doping at the Beijing 2008 Games. The athletes come from eight different countries. The doping failures came the reanalysis of 386 doping samples.
Of the 138 samples retested from the London 2012 Games, 15 athletes were positive. They are from nine countries and compete in two sports.
"The new reanalysis once again shows the commitment of the IOC in the fight against doping," IOC president Thomas Bach said.
The IOC gave no further details about the sports or names of athletes.
"All athletes found to have infringed the anti-doping rules will be banned from competing at the Olympic Games Rio 2016," the IOC said.
The IOC said the athletes, NOCs and international federations are being informed about the test results after which disciplinary proceedings against the athletes can begin.
The latest results bring to 98 the total number of athletes who have tested positive for banned substances from the first and second waves of reanalysis. In total, 1,243 doping samples from the Beijing and London Games have been reanalysed as part of the IOC’s targeted testing of medalists.
Two further rounds of retesting will take place during and after the Rio Olympics, the IOC added.
