Global Interest in the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cup vote in Zurich set new traffic records for World Football INSIDER, reinforcing its position once again as the publication of record for news about football.
INSIDER recorded more than three million hits in the 30 days leading up to the vote Dec. 2. That number was almost 35 percent higher than hits recorded during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
World Football INSIDER editor Mark Bisson and correspondent James Corbett were on the scene in Zurich as FIFA president Sepp Blatter announced Russia as the 2018 host and Qatar as the 2022 host.
Both Russia and Qatar received high numbers in INSIDER’s World Cup Bid Power Index published just days before the vote. To view the Bid Power Index, click here.
"Over the last 18 months, more and more fans across the globe have come to depend on INSIDER for its record of absolutely accurate analysis and context," said Publisher Sheila Scott Hula.
"You need only look at the most recent World Cup Bid Power Index to see why readers turn to INSIDER first -- and to see why our team of Bisson and Corbett are quoted more often than any other football writers."
Many internationally known news organizations turned to INSIDER for expert opinion in the days surrounding the vote. They include Nippon TV, CBC (Korea), Sport TV (Portugal), RTVE (Spain), USA Today, The Age and The Australian, among others.
INSIDER will continue its World Cup coverage as Russia and Qatar join Rio in preparing to host the event.
"In terms of the 2018 and 2022 World Cup hosts, the focus falls on how Russia converts its bid promises on venues and infrastructure into reality and how Qatar develops its much-vaunted stadium cooling technologies," said Editor Mark Bisson.
"Looking ahead, INSIDER will cover the Asian Football Confederation Congress on Jan. 6 and the AFC Asian Cup that follows in Doha. The FIFA Congress in May and the Germany Women's World Cup in the summer are among other big stories for INSIDER in 2011."
World Football Insider, launched in 2009, was the first internet publication to focus solely on football, the world’s most popular sport.
The site is open to all visitors without subscription. It is supported by advertising; advertisers have included several World Cup bid nations, Samsung, Conceptum Sport Logistics, and Hublot Geneve.
