(ATR) India’s Congress Party called for an inquiry into potential corruption regarding the 2014 Lusofonia Games medals.
Goa, India hosted the third Lusofonia Games in January, featuring Portuguese-speaking countries and those with a common past with Portugal.
The tender awarded for the medals was to a company owned by the central government and quoted the cost for each medal at $108.
Three companies were denied the tender according to the Congress Party despite quoting costs of $8, $6.70, and $10 a medal, Congress spokesman Durgadas Kamat said in a press conference.
"All procedures and protocols were followed by us during the tendering processes," India sports minister Ramesh Tawadkar said.
"The congress is frustrated. They are not used to being in the opposition and are making baseless charges."
Kamat went on to add that the congress believes the government overspent on the opening and closing ceremonies for the Games.
"We are going to the Central Bureau of Investigation with our complaint, because we have no faith in the state police," Kamat said.
