(ATR) Olympic Day 2020 is celebrated in a much-changed world from June 23, 1894 when the IOC voted for the revival of the Olympic Games. The meeting in Paris in a grand hall at the Sorbonne was the second try by Baron Pierre de Coubertin to win approval for the modern Olympics.

On June 23, 1994, the IOC met for the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of that decision, gathering in the same hall in Paris where de Coubertin achieved his dream. One of the guests for the centennial observance was John Lucas, a professor at Pennsylvania State University recognized as one of the world's leading scholars of the Olympics. He spent nearly an hour with Around the Rings Editor Ed Hula to tell the story of the birth of the modern Games. In this excerpt from that interview he talks about the 1894 meeting and the strategy the Baron used to win worldwide backing for the Games.
