(ATR) New Pan American Sports Organization chief Neven Ilic is making the Pan American Games a top priority in his first week as president.
According to PASO, Ilic came directly from the PASO General Assembly in Punta del Este, Uruguay last week to the Peruvian capital to check on preparations with just over two years until the Lima 2019 Pan Ams. The trip marks the first international visit Ilic has made as PASO president following his election at the general assembly.
"The President of PASO extended a warm greeting from the whole Pan American Sports Organization that met just last week in Punta del Este, Uruguay, to the President of Peru and conveyed everyone’s desire for a successful delivery of the Games in Lima," PASO said in a statement.
"Ilic promised his full support to the organization in Peru."
Ilic met with Peru President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski in the Presidential Palace along with Lima 2019 president Carlos Neuhaus on May 2. Kuczynski offered the full support of the Peruvian government towards Lima 2019 preparations.
Ilic detailed how the Pan Am Games will benefit Peruvian society and the legacy it will leave on the country.
"The eyes of the world will be in Peru in 2019 and that will bring great benefits to sports, tourism, business and social and urban infrastructure in Lima, leaving an important legacy to the capital city and to the entire nation," PASO said in a statement.
"We are confident that this is the beginning of strong relationship between Lima 2019 and the new PASO leadership as we work together to deliver a Games that PASO and Peru can be proud of, a great experience for every participant, and a meaningful legacy for the people of Peru and beyond," Lima 2019 chief Neuhaus said in a statement.
Following the meeting at the Presidential Palace, Ilic toured Lima 2019 offices where he received status updates via presentations. The new PASO president will also take a tour of the venues and construction sites that will be used to stage the Pan Ams while in Peru.
Ilic will be returning to Lima next week with PASO’s 14 other Executive Committee members to get all of PASO’s new leadership up to speed with the preparations for their flagship event.
