Clearing the Air in Italy

(ATR) Representatives of the IOC, the Italian government and the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI) meet next week to begin work on ensuring the government’s sport reform plan conforms to the Olympic Charter.

Around the Rings has learned that the first meeting, scheduled for November 20 in Milan, will be at a technical level. A source familiar with the situation says that this initial lower level discussion would set the stage for a political level meeting at a later date, adding that there is time to reach a solution that is best for all parties.

In August, the IOC Olympic Solidarity director James Macleod sent CONI President Giovanni Malagò a letter warning that the pending legislation could put at risk the status of the Italian National Olympic Committee.

Favorites Emerging in Premier 12

(ATR) Mexico, South Korea and Japan are in the driver's seat to make the final four at the 2nd WBSC Premier 12 baseball tournament after the first day of the Super Round.

Mexico defeated Chinese Taipei 2-0 in first of two games at ZOZO Marine Stadium in Chiba on Monday. Six Mexican pitchers combined for the shutout.

Japan, which is hosting the final part of the tournament, came from behind to beat Australia 3-2 in the night game. The winning run was scored on a two-out bunt in the eighth inning.

In the other night game, South Korea beat the USA 5-1 at Tokyo Dome in a re-match of the 2015 championship game won by the Koreans. This time, a three-run home run from Jaehwan Kim set them on their way.

IOC President Could Ease Tensions in Africa

(ATR) IOC President Thomas Bach begins a week-long visit to Africa where he will encounter the successes and challenges facing the Olympic Movement on the continent.

He starts in Cape Verde, home to one of the 11 new IOC members elected in 2019, Filomena Fortes. Cape Verde successfully hosted the first African Beach Games in June.

From there it’s on to Senegal, where the 2022 Youth Olympic Games are scheduled to be held.

While the IOC is pleased to bring the YOG to Africa for the first time, disposing of the scandal involving former IAAF president and IOC member Lamine Diack and his son Papa Masata, both Senegalese, is something the IOC hopes is finished by 2022.

Honor for Atlanta Olympics Bombing Hero

(ATR) Once a suspect, Richard Jewell is recognized for his heroics in Centennial Olympic Park.

Richard Jewell, working as a security guard in the park the night of the July 27 bombing during the Atlanta Olympics, will receive a plaque in his honor next March. Jewell moved people out of the way of a suspicious backpack left at a bench in the park before it exploded.

While nearly 200 people were injured and there were two fatalities associated with the bombing, Jewell’s actions are credited with saving more people from harm. But soon after, Jewell was labeled as a suspect by investigators with his name leaked to the media. He was hounded for weeks afterward by police and press until the FBI issued a statement that Jewell wasn’t a suspect in the attack.
