2023 Mediterranean Beach Games Attracts Bidders

(ATR) A record number of candidates want to host the third edition of the Mediterranean Beach Games in 2023.

Italy, which hosted the inaugural event in 2015 at Pescara, has put forth the city of Pesaro on the Adriatic coast this time around.

Larnaca, Cyprus and Figueira da Foz, Portugal are the other candidates. It’s the first time there have been three bidders to host the event.

Portugal is one of the member countries of the International Committee of the Mediterranean Games (ICMG) that does not border a part of the Mediterranean Sea. Should Figueira win the bid, it would mean the Mediterranean Beach Games would be held on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean.

The three bidders must submit their candidature files by Dec. 31 and should send them to each of the 26 member NOCs by January 7, 2020.

Overwhelming Demand for Tokyo Olympic Tix

(ATR) The grandstands at the Tokyo Olympics should be filled with spectators.

Organizers of the Games say the second round of ticket sales through a lottery for Japanese ticket buyers is oversubscribed by 22 million orders. Just one million tickets were for sale.

The first round of ticket sales parceled out 3.57 million tickets to Japanese buyers. More than 60 million tickets were ordered.

Out of a total of 7.8 million tickets for Tokyo 2020, about 60 percent will go to the Japanese market.

There still are tickets available in the U.S., the biggest single market for Olympic tickets outside the host nation. But CoSport, the authorized ticket reseller for the U.S.,saysa blistering market in Japan means tight supply in the U.S.

"Although the United States represents one of the largest markets in the world, the Olympic Games endeavors to level the playing fields and spectator stands alike, with the United States being just one player sharing in limited global ticket allocations following formidable Japanese demand," CoSport president Robert F. Long tells Around the Rings.

Philippines Wants to Step Up Hosting Duties

(ATR) The Philippines believes hosting the just completed Southeast Asian Games will help the country in staging the Asian Games in 2030.

Philippine Olympic Committee president Abraham Tolentino says he will be traveling to Jakarta next week to officially bid for the 21st edition of the Asian Games, according to media reports in the Philippines.

The country has hosted the Asian Games only once, in 1954 in Manila.

"It’s going to be a long process. The Olympic Council of Asia will have to study it (our bid) first. But we have 10 years to prepare – the good thing is our workforce, the volunteers already have the experience," Tolentino told reporters.
