The name of Nuribi as the mascot of the Gwangju Universiade 2015 is a compounded Korean word with ‘Nuri’, symbolizing the world and ‘Bi’ for flying. Nuribi is to be a messenger of light as well as a bridge of communication amongst the world’s youth.
It serves as a symbol to present the visions of the EPIC (Eco-friendliness, Peace, IT, and Culture) and also reveals the unfolding wings of creation to deliver the 'light of the Gwangju City’ to the world.
The Nuribi has been created to accentuate the younger-looking and the more lively spirit well representing the youth's sporting festivity in a different way of characterizing from the previous characters originated in animals for other sporting events.
As for the emblem of the GU 2015, the "Wings of Light" stands for the soaring with passion, dreams, and harmony by the wings that imply the five great oceans and six continents. The five bluish wings on the right signify the five great oceans while the six reddish ones on the left symbolize the six continents. The overlapped colors denote the harmony and friendship among the world’s youth in the Universiade.
Wings of Light shaped like the "U" connotes the meaning of the Universiade that is extended into outspread wings. It also represents the passion of athletes exceeding over individual limitations and the dynamic atmosphere of sports towards the national inclusion with the Gwangju’s wingbeat. The soaring U-shaped wings symbolize the take-off the Gwangju City to be the global city. The radiating lights bear the wish for the ideal and victory at the Universiade.
"Light Up Tomorrow" is the slogan for the city of light, Gwangju, which expresses its vision to illuminate the future of the world. It represents the city’s identity derived from its name(Gwang, 광, 光) to be positioned at the center of the 21st-century boasting the high-tech industry, and challenging with the brisk spirit and passion of the world’s youth during the Universiade. It also symbolizes Gwangju’s effort to brighten the future of the world through the Universiade and also signifies the city’s intention to create momentum for sustainable development toward a better future.
The GUOC 2015 has been planning to promote the symbols in a variety of domestic and international occasions. Those will be helping the images become more familiar with the citizens since they had the showcase last April.
All of the Nuribi, the emblem of the Wings of Light, and the slogan of the "Light Up Tomorrow" have been created under the coherent identification in the image of the light. They are eventually intended to integrate all the ideas of the city's dream, global concord, and the youthful enthusiasm.
