(ATR) The citizens of Hamburg made what they hope is a record-setting display of Olympic enthusiasm.
Despite heavy rain, 20,000 people held lit lanterns, torches and candles on Friday night at the city’s Inner Alster Lake. The evening was highlighted by a large fireworks display.
The event could land Hamburg in the Guinness Book of World Records. The current record for people holding simultaneously lit torches is 3,777.
An exact number of participants at Friday’s event is not yet known. An announcement on a possible record will be made once the count is determined.
Hamburg is one of two cities in Germany, along with Berlin, that could bid for the 2024 Summer Olympics.
A final decision will be made by the DOSB on March 21 in Frankfurt. Boston and Rome also plan to bid with bids possible from Paris, Budapest, Doha and Baku.
