The Gwangju Universiade Organizing Committee (GUOC) is holding out a hand for the national team of Nepal to help them participate in the Summer Universiade as planned.
The GUOC, co-headed by Presidents Yoon Jang-hyun and Kim Hwang-sik, has begun a fund-raising event among the GUOC executives and staff members. The collected money from the May 21-29 fundraiser will all be spent for the Nepalese athletes' participation in the Universiade.
Under the assumption that the Nepalese team will be going through economic difficulties with the earthquakes that shook the nation recently, the GUOC has decided to open a fundraiser among all its employees.
The GUOC President Yoon Jang-hyun made a donation himself on May 21 and encouraged all the committee staff members to participate.
The committee plans to deliver the collected money directly to the Nepal University Sports Federation or hand it over to the Nepalese government through the Community Chest of Korea, the nation's biggest charity.
"We have decided to hold the fund-raising event for the athletes from the quake-stricken Nepal in ways to honor the Peaceversiade, one of the Gwangju Universiade’s major initiatives," said a GUOC official.
