The Gwangju Universiade Athletes Village (AV) officially opened for athletes and officials on June 26, a week before the opening of Universiade Gwangju 2015.

The Athletes Village Mayor Lim Duck-ho declared the official opening in the Flag Plaza on Friday morning. The village is located in the center of the city and is ten minutes from the Universiade Main Stadium and 15 minutes from Main Media Center.

The International University Sports Federation (FISU), the Republic of Korea (the host country), emblem of the Universiade Gwangju 2015, and Korean University Sports Board flags were hoisted in the Flag Plaza after the declaration AV opening day by GUOC Co-President Kim Hwang-sik.

The mayor also delivered a progress report on the village. According to the report, Gwangju was selected as a host city of the Universiade 2015 in May 2009. A year after the city won the bid in August 2010, the Gwangju Universiade Organizing Committee (GUOC) decided to utilize the 30 year old Hwajeong Jookong Reconstruction Apartment Complex for the AV. The construction was launched in September 2012 after Gwangju Metropolitan City signed an agreement on the use of the apartment complex as the Athletes Village with the Hwajeong Jookong Reconstruction Association and the contractor, Hyundai Engineering and Construction in May 2011.

2,445 units will be accommodating the athletes and officials from June 26 to July 17.

An official of the GUOC stated, "We will support all athletes participating in the Universiade to perform their talents in the best conditions."

Meanwhile, over 13,000 participants from 150 countries will take part in the Universiade Gwangju 2015.
