Guo Chuan, the Chinese sailor, has arrived on Sunday in Rio de Janeiro after leaving 16 days ago from La-Trinité-sur-Mer. The trans-Atlantic voyage was a practice for Guo Chuan’s next project, the solo trans-Pacific world record challenge, which is due to start in the coming autumn.
But this journey is also the opportunity for the Champion for Peace to carry the spirit of Peace and Sport to the Rio 2016 Olympics. The trimaran is named Beijing Time and the sail number is 2022, signifying support for the 2016 Rio Games and the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.
"It is worrying to see news of terrorism attacks, regional disputes and local unrest frequently on TV these days, but sport has the power to bring people together and it can build friendships and draw lines of respect across borders. One important element of the Olympic spirit is peace. The Olympic Movement unites all people and builds bridges between all cultures. In Olympic sport, all people are equal, regardless of their ethnicity, gender or faith. On sports competition arena, people put wars, conflicts and disagreements aside and become friends. As a Champion for Peace working with Peace and Sports, I welcome friends to visit our trimaran during our stay at late Clube do Rio de Janeiro and hope we can spread the words of Peace and Sport wider on the Olympic stage. All together, let’s make our world better via the power of sports" said Guo Chuan.
"Guo Chuan has been carrying the message of peace and sport across the oceans, and his journey to Rio is another example of his commitment to forging peace, dialogue and friendships through sailing. After carrying the Olympic Torch across the famous Rio-Antirrio Bridge in Greece wearing the Peace and Sport symbol, his boat will be a meeting point for all the Champions for Peace who wish to promote peace during the Rio Games and the Olympic Truce" declared Joël Bouzou, President and Founder of Peace and Sport.
During the Olympic period, the trimaran will stay at late Clube do Rio de Janeiro inside Guanabara Bay, where the Olympic sailing event will be held.
