(ATR) Great Britain is in celebratory mood today after Team GB's most successful day at an Olympics in 104 years. On Saturday they won six gold medals, including three in track and field.

On day eight of London 2012, gold medals first came in rowing in the men's four and the women's lightweight double sculls before another gold came from the velodrome in the women’s team pursuit.

But it was the evening session in the Olympic Stadium that had the nation going wild with celebration. Jessica Ennis, Greg Rutherford and Mo Farah won the heptathlon, long jump and 10,000m within a captivating hour of competition.

In the celebrations it seemed nearly everyone in the host nation was watching. Prime Minister David Cameron tweeted "Awe-inspiring win for Jessica Ennis. Proud to be cheering her on with the home crowd. Atmosphere electric on #SuperSaturday."

London mayor Boris Johnson joined in tweeting "Forget about Super Saturday, this was Spectacular Saturday! What a night! So so proud."

Team GB chef de mission Andy Hunt gave his thoughts soon after the end of the session."What unfolded over the course of a single day has been years in the making," he said. "It is a day unlike any that has been seen in the modern history of British Olympic sport. And it is a day our country will never forget."

"Most importantly, it is a day for the athletes – the Olympic champions – and the millions of supporters throughout our country who have lifted them on their shoulders and helped make this possible."

This morning, the British newspapers reflected the ecstatic mood with headlines like "SENSATIONAL!" in the Sunday Telegraph, "THE SIX PACK" in the Sun on Sunday, and "GOLD RUSH!" in the Observer.

Disgraced Swimmers Leave London

Australian swimmers Nick D'Arcy and Kenrick Monk have now left London 2012.

The Australian Olympic Committee revealed on Saturday that both had surrendered their accreditation and left the Olympic Village. There was public uproar over the duo’s pictures on Facebook of them brandishing guns.

"D'Arcy and Monk were due to return to Australia tonight following the conclusion of the Olympic swimming competition," a statement from the AOC said. "The AOC Team Executive has agreed to this change in plans on the basis that Monk and D'Arcy do not remain in London or return to London during the period of the London Olympic Games."

"It is understood theyare intending to holiday in Europe with family and friends."

The statement then went on to say that the two had agreed not to "engage in social media activity during the Games' period".

Following their sabbatical in Europe away from the spotlight in their own nation, D’Arcy and Monk will then have to fund their own journey back home.

Travel Report

Sunday will see a continuation of the road closures that took place on Saturday around The Mall as the women’s marathon takes place.

Transport for London (TFL) says that road closures and bus diversions were in place from as early as 3am and that a large number of spectators are expected all along the race route.

However, in a bid to try and attract people into the city TFL also say "consider making the most of the theatres, restaurants, shops, free concerts and other attractions London has to offer."

Westfield Shopping Centre will be open again to the public after being closed to non-ticket holders on Friday and Saturday.
