Governor General become patron of the Canadian Olympic Committee

In keeping with his responsibility to encourage excellence and bring Canadians together, His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, has agreed to become the Patron of the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC), it was announced today.

"Canada is the best country in this world and our Governor General holds a special place in our collective identity as the representative of our Head of State, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II., ," said Marcel Aubut, President of the Canadian Olympic Committee. "As stewards of Canada’s Olympic Movement, we are honoured and humbled that His Excellency has formally singled out our organization as one whose values work in tandem with the purpose of his office. With our mandate energized by this honour, we will continue to support and promote outstanding achievement and the pursuit of excellence by our Canadian athletes, and a stronger, prouder, healthier Canada for all of us."

"We are absolutely thrilled and honoured that the Governor General has agreed to be Patron of the Canadian Olympic Committee", continued Christopher Overholt, COC Chief Executive Officer and Secretary General. "Just as our athletes are at the heart of the COC, the Governor General is at the heart Canadian identity. We look forward to having His Excellency continuing to inspire our athletes through his commitment and unwavering support and that our athletes will inspire him as they have inspired all Canadians from coast to coast to coast."
