(ATR) The first female member of the FIFA Executive Committee could soon make the record books again.
After being co-opted onto the Ex-Co last May as part of ongoing reforms to world football’s governing body, Lydia Nsekera is one of four candidates to become the first female elected to the Ex-Co this May at the FIFA Congress in Mauritius.
A former basketball player and high jumper, she was elected president of the Burundi Football Federation in 2004, the first woman in Africa to reach such a post and only the second worldwide.
After organizing the first women’s football championship in Burundi and leading a national campaign to involve women in sports administration, coaching and refereeing, she joined the IOC in 2009, the same year she won its coveted Women and Sport Trophy.
Nsekera, 45, a company director by day, is also active in raising awareness of HIV/AIDS as well as sexual violence against women.
