(ATR) Germany is chosen to host Euro 2024, beating out Turkey for the honor.

The final vote among the 17 eligible members of the UEFA Executive Committee was 12-4, with one abstention.

Both bids had made final presentations before the vote at the House of European Football in Nyon, Switzerland on Thursday.

"Let me offer my congratulations to both the German and Turkish football associations for their excellent bids," UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin said. "I know that Germany will be fantastic hosts and that we will see a wonderful tournament both on and off the pitch."

Euro 2024 will mark the first time that a unified Germany will host the European Championship. West Germany hosted the 1988 edition. Germany did host the 2006 World Cup and will be one of the countries hosting Euro 2020, which is being held across Europe.

Turkey came up short again in its fourth attempt to host the Euros, having also failed in 2008, 2012 and 2016.

UEFA released the evaluation report for the bids on Sept. 21, less than a week before the vote. The report said that Germany’s bid "is of high quality and comfortably meets overall expectations when it comes to political aspects, social responsibility, sustainability and human rights".

The Turkish bid evaluation, on the other hand, raised concerns over infrastructure, finance and human rights.

Erzurum, Turkey is one of the four remaining potential hosts for the 2026 Winter Olympics. Istanbul has failed in five attempts to host the Summer Games.
