HRH Prince Feisal Al Hussein and HRH Princess Sarah Al-Feisal of non-profit peace building organisation Generations For Peace yesterday joined a debate entitled "Harmony and Health: How far can sport provide the solutions" at the University of Oxford.
The debate coincided with a prestigious Olympic Torch Relay dinner at Rhodes House. University Chancellor, Lord Patten of Barnes, welcomed guests including, among others, Sir Roger Bannister and Lady Bannister, Olympic gold medallist Dr Stephanie Cook MBE, Vice Chair of the British Olympic Association Dr David Hemery CBE, journalist and presenter Mr Brough Scott MBE, former Olympic rowers Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss, as well as other distinguished University of Oxford academics, alumni and experts in the field.
International Olympic Committee member, HRH Prince Feisal, commented on the extraordinary welcome given to the Olympic Torch Relay in Oxford and around the entire country, raising prospects of what can be expected in 17 days time when London greets the world at the opening of the 2012 Olympic Games.
HRH Prince Feisal then highlighted the connection shared by the assembled guests: ‘Tonight, we are all here because of our links to sport and the University. My brother, His Majesty King Abdullah II, and I are both committed to the peace building legacy of our late father, HM King Hussein. He was an avid sportsman, and nurtured in us a love of sport, respect for one’s opponent and fair play, and graciousness in victory and defeat.
"I am proud to carry on my father’s work through the organisation I founded in 2007, Generations For Peace, combining peace, education and sport, and empowering youth to lead change in communities experiencing different forms of conflict and violence."
HRH Princess Sarah emphasised the importance of research partnerships: ‘Our partnership with the University of Oxford is one of the key elements of our strategy that will allow us to connect academics with practitioners on the ground.
‘The research and development led by our scholars at Oxford will enable us to identify and share knowledge and best practices across our own programmes and the wider peace building community, helping to achieve and promote greater innovation, quality, impact and sustainability.’
The Generations For Peace Institute is sponsoring three extremely promising and talented students from the University, engaged in field research into programmes in several different countries.
