Australia’s best practice industry standards will be applied to printing work required by the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC) in support of the Games in 2018.

The environment and economy are both set to gain after the appointment of a panel of four South East Queensland printing firms that have all embraced the Sustainable Green Print (SGP) standard.

Their appointments follow a highly competitive process undertaken by GOLDOC which attracted a significant number of suppliers during an open market Expression of Interest (EOI).

Earlier, in a landmark move, GOLDOC, the Printing Industries Association of Australia (PIAA) and the Department of State Development (DSD) partnered to deliver a tendering workshop to the shortlisted companies.

GOLDOC Chairman Peter Beattie AC said the process not only identified best practice in the successful panellists, but encouraged several others to upgrade their systems to meet current industry standards of printing sustainably.

"A number of the tenderers used the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018) as a catalyst to review their current printing sustainability status and improve what they were doing," Mr Beattie said.

"That means that there is now, more than ever before, a range of local printers who are more sustainability aware and who now meet the Sustainable Green Print standard.

"GOLDOC’s sustainability vision is to show leadership in sustainability by delivering GC2018 to international standards of best practice, leaving positive economic, environmental, social and community legacies," Mr Beattie said.

Printing Industries Association of Australia (PIAA) CEO Andrew Macaulay said the process is a great example of GOLDOC’s work around industry engagement, Queensland business capacity and sustainability.

"GOLDOC worked closely with the PIAA to provide training to printers in South East Queensland who were interested in responding to tenders for Commonwealth Games work," Mr Macaulay said.

"The recognition of industry certified sustainability accreditation has been central to this process.

"GOLDOC has helped raise the bar for our industry by specifying the Australian printing industry certification program in their tender process.

"PIAA supports GOLDOC in its mission to source environmentally sustainable print.

"Queensland’s environment and economy have both benefited as a consequence," he said.
