(ATR) With the deadline to apply this week, the city of Fukuoka in southern Japan has submitted a formal application to the Japanese Olympic Committee to bid for the 2016 Olympics.
Mayor Hirotaro Yamasaki presented the proposal to JOC President Tsunekazu Takeda in Tokyo today.
Tokyo, the only other candidate, is expected to file its papers with the JOC on Friday, the close of the application period. The JOC will select a candidate on August 30.
Takeda, speaking at a news briefing, said that planning will be one of the hallmarks of whichever city is chose to represent Japan.
"We are expecting to see a plan of the highest quality that will be recognized as such by the world," he said.
The Fukuoka mayor says that his city, with a population of 1.5 million has the space to create a compact Games, with the Olympic Village located within five minutes of venues for half of the athletes.
Yamasaki says that the city is ready to spend $3 billion out of the $15 billion in infrastructure costs that is estimated needed to ready Fukuoka for the Olympics.
