The International Council of Arbitration for Sport (ICAS), the body supervising the management of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), has appointed Justice Ellen Gracie Northfleet (Brazil) as a new member of ICAS, replacing Mr Alain Plantey (France), who passed away earlier this year.

Justice Ellen Gracie Northfleet is an attorney in private practice and arbitrator in Rio de Janeiro/Brazil. She has an impressive judicial career in Brazil, starting as Federal Attorney (Ministério Público Federal) (1973-1989); then as Judge of the Federal Court of Appeals (Tribunal Regional Federal da 4ª Região) (1989-2000) and Chief-Judge of that same Court (1997-1999); as Justice of the Federal Supreme Court (Supremo Tribunal Federal) (2000-2011) and Chief-Justice of the same Court (2006-2008), as well as Presiding Judge of the National Justice Council (Conselho Nacional de Justiça).

Following a meeting in Rio de Janeiro, also attended by ICAS Vice-President Michael Lenard and CAS Secretary General Matthieu Reeb, the ICAS President, Mr John Coates, welcomed the appointment of Justice Gracie Northfleet: "We can be happy and honoured by the appointment of Justice Ellen Gracie, a major reformer of the Brazilian Judicial System, as an ICAS member. Her judicial experience and knowledge of international arbitration will be of great value to our organisation. It is also opportune to give an ICAS seat to South America in view of the major sports events to be held in Brazil in the near future".

The mission of the ICAS is to facilitate the settlement of sports-related disputes through arbitration or mediation conducted by independent arbitrators/mediators. Among its duties, the ICAS looks after the administration and finances of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and monitors the application of the Code of Sports-related Arbitration (CAS procedural rules). The ICAS is composed of 20 international lawyers coming from the sports movement or the arbitration world.
