(ATR) The 1984 Los Angeles Olympics is helping to pay for an upgrade to the city's largest football facility.
On the 30th anniversary of the 1984 L.A. Games, Rafer Johnson inaugurated the renovation of Ferraro Fields. Monday's event seems to be the largest event commemorating the Games.
Johnson was joined by Olympic legends Edwin Moses and Greg Louganis, as well as L.A. mayor Eric Garcetti to kick off the renovation. When complete, the project will cost $10.5 million.
A total of $3.5 million has been raised so far, with $1 million coming from the LA 84 Foundation. The endowment was established from the 1984 Olympics' profit.
"Thirty years later, the impact of the 1984 Olympic Games lives on in projects such as Ferraro Fields," Anita DeFrantz, LA84 Foundation President, said in a statement.
The 26-acre, seven-field facility will triple its capacity, eventually serving 340,000 players a year.
The project is scheduled to be complete by July 2016.
"[It’s] a fitting tribute to the fine athletes who competed here in Los Angeles 30 years ago and a reminder of the enormous benefits the '84 Games continue to bring to our city" Johnson said at the dedication.
