Adelaide, Australia

Football Federation Australia (FFA) today congratulated the South Australian Government and Premier Steven Marshall MP for their decision to fully back the Bid to host the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

FFA Chief Executive David Gallop AM said he was delighted that South Australia has got onside with the Bid, "The announcement today is a tremendous boost to our hopes of hosting the tournament in 2023. We are thrilled that South Australia have committed to be part of the Bid, which will be stronger for their participation.

"It’s particularly pleasing to make this announcement on the day of the Westfield Matildas’ second match against Chile, which takes place tonight at Coopers Stadium.

"The team put in a strong performance to beat the same opponents 2-1 in Parramatta on Saturday, in front of a record crowd of 20,029.

"It shows just how popular the Matildas are, and I’m sure the South Australian public will be absolutely delighted that Premier Marshall shares our vision and will bring matches to Adelaide should we be successful in our bid," Gallop added.

Premier Marshall said that the State Government is ready and excited to assist in bringing the 2023 Women’s World Cup to Australia.

"The FIFA Women’s World Cup is a massive event to add to our sporting calendar, and Adelaide will be a fantastic location for the competition," said Premier Steven Marshall.

"The Matildas are a shining example of Australian sporting prowess and hosting the World Cup will allow them to showcase their skills on the biggest stage in their own backyard."

The Westfield Matildas versus Chile game at Coopers Stadium kicks off at 7.30pm ACDT tonight. Tickets for the match are available on matildas.com.au/tickets
