(ATR) Five candidates meet the deadline to enter the Pan American Sports Organization. but the the field will likely be trimmed in the coming week.

Brazilian Olympic Committee president Carlos Nuzman, Chilean Olympic Committee president Neven Ilic, St. Vincent and the Grenadines Olympic Committee secretary general Keith Joseph, former Dominican Republic Olympic Committee president Jose Puello and St. Lucia Olympic Committee secretary general Richard Peterkin were all nominated by their respective National Olympic Committees by the deadline according to PASO.

"As provided by Article 15 of our Constitution, please be informed that all nomination letters for the position of President received from our National Olympic Committees members of PASO fulfill the established requirements," an email sent from PASO secretary general Jimena Saldana to the 41 NOCs in the organization reads.

The deadline was Jan. 25 for the election set for April 26 inPunta del Este, Uruguay.

Around the Ringsis told that the Caribbean Association of National Olympic Committees intends to elect either Joseph, Puello or Peterkin to be the one presidential candidate from the region at meeting Feb. 2-3 in Cartagena, Colombia.

In a letter sent to the 26 CANOC countries earlier this month, Peterkin already announced his expectation to drop out of the race in favor of another candidate in the region.

Peterkin was the first to announce his intention to become the next president in 2014 before the death of former PASO president Mario Vazquez Rana and election of his replacement Julio Maglione.

"Between now and April, I don’t have a lot of money to go flying all over the place, meeting people," Peterkin told ATR regarding his doubts towards the candidacy. "I can’t take this intrigue, the campaigning and all that."

Puello tells ATR he respects Peterkin’s honesty and that he would be honored to continue working with him even if Peterkin drops from the race. Although Peterkin is likely to exit the campaign he says he would be happy to work with the next president, potentially as the treasurer once more, a position he held until 2012 when he clashed with Vazquez Rana.

PASO will also elect new members to its Executive Committee at the general assembly on the Uruguayan coast. Applicants for these positions have until Feb. 24 to submit their intentions to the PASO secretary general.
