The Nominations for the 2016 Laureus World Sports Awards will be announced on March 2 - and U.S. sport is hoping to be strongly represented after another excellent year.
Particularly tennis legend Serena Williams, who is waiting to see if the world’s media have selected her for a record tenth Laureus Nomination, after a sparkling 2015 in which she won three Grand Slams.
Six Nominees will be announced for each of the Sportsman, Sportswoman, Team, Breakthrough, Comeback, Disability and Action Sports categories.
Three-time Laureus winner Serena heads a stellar list of the great names in US sport from 2015, who are all contenders for Nomination, including: basketball’s Stephen Curry, LeBron James and Golden State Warriors; track and field’s Ashton Eaton, Allyson Felix and Aries Merritt; baseball’s Mike Trout and Kansas City Royals; NFL’s New England Patriots; Carli Lloyd and the World Cup winning US Women’s Football Team; world no.1 golfer Jordan Spieth; ski star Lindsey Vonn; boxing’s Floyd Mayweather; gymnast Simone Biles; and teenage swimming sensation Katie Ledecky.
Action Sport also throws up some strong candidates, led by three-time world surfing champion Carissa Moore. Other possible Nominees are skateboard star Nyjah Huston, snocross’s Tucker Hibbert and Chloe Kim, aged 14, who beat snowboard legend Kelly Clark to win the Superpipe gold medal in the X-Games at Aspen.
The Laureus World Sports Awards are the most prestigious honours in the international sporting calendar. The Nominees are selected by the votes of a panel of 2,000 of the world’s media.
