The International University Sports Federation (FISU) has today signed Norilsk Nickel Mining and Metallurgical Company (MMC Norilsk Nickel) as its latest partner, during SportAccord Convention in Lausanne.

The partnership will see MMC Norilsk Nickel support FISU’s activities and official events, including the World University Championships, the International Day of University Sport, the FISU Forum and Lausanne in Motion. The deal follows MMC Norilsk Nickel’s agreement to become a General Partner of the Krasnoyarsk 2019 Winter Universiade.

MMC Norilsk Nickel is the world’s number one manufacturer of nickel and palladium and one of the largest producers of platinum and copper. The company owns the entertainment park Bobrovy Log - one of the sports venues for the Krasnoyarsk Universiade - as well as professional basketball team CSKA Moscow and the mini-football club Norilsk Nickel. It is also an official sponsor of the Russian Football Union and the Russian national football team.

FISU is the International Federation for student sport at Universities or tertiary-level educational institutions around the world. The Federation also aims to inspire students to play more sport and to recognise sport as a vital tool in helping them reach their potential in life.

FISU is in the process of developing a new FISU Strategy that will comprise strategic goals for the next 10 years across all areas, especially its commercial operations, marketing and communications activities and development of the Games concept at both Universiades and World University Championships.

Today’s signing ceremony was attended by FISU President Oleg Matytsin, FISU Secretary General Eric Saintrond and the Vice President of MMC Norilsk Nickel Elena Bezdenezhnykh.

FISU President Oleg Matytsin said:

"We are very pleased to announce that Norilsk Nickel has decided to partner with FISU. This is an international company with great experience in helping to deliver global sports projects. Having supported educational programmes and children’s sport, it makes sense that Norilsk Nickel is now involved in University sport too.

"I have no doubt that, with Norilsk Nickel’s help, FISU will be better equipped to deliver its mission to act for the health and wellbeing of students, and thereby help them to become tomorrow’s leaders."

Vice President of MMC Norilsk Nickel Elena Bezdenezhnykh said:

"After Norilsk Nickel became a General Partner of the 2019 Winter Universiade in Krasnoyarsk, it was a natural progression for us to start a working relationship with FISU. Support of sport at all levels – professional, university and grassroots – is an integral part of our company’s social policy. University sport is very important not only in Russia but throughout the world and we hope that our support will aid FISU in attracting more participants to the international university sports movement and holding Krasnoyarsk 2019 at the highest level."

A total of 33 World University Championships will take place in different sports around the world throughout 2016. Lausanne in Motion will take place on 24 September and the FISU Forum is due to be held in Montpellier, France, from 4-9 July.
