First Full Week of Competition for Pan Ams

(ATR) After the opening weekend of events, 40 countries will try to catch up to team Canada who leads all with 24 medals at the Pan Am Games.

Canada also leads the gold medal count with 10 thus far. The United States have 7 golds and trail Canada by five medals overall. Mexico is in third with 18 medals and four golds.

In the first full week of competition, 27 NOCs still aim for their first medals in Toronto.

Athletes in nine sports will compete for medals on Monday, including rowing, which begins today, along withbeach volleyball and field hockey tournaments.

Competition will also end for diving and speed skating.

BMX, mountain cycling, open water, roller sport figure skating, rugby sevens, synchronized swimming and triathlon are finished after the first weekend of competition.

Tuesday brings about the start of the highly anticipated swimming events in Toronto’s first Olympic caliber swimming facility. Toronto 2015 chief executive officer Saad Rafi says this venue has already had great crowds with loud fans throughout the diving competition.

The archery competition starts Tuesday, with canoeing flat and judo coming to a conclusion. The United States and Canada will face off in the women’s water polo finale with the men’s final scheduled for Wednesday.

The rest of the week brings the debut of basketball, cycling track, golf, handball, volleyball and wrestling competitions get underway.

By the end of the week, athletes in 16 of the 36 sports at the Pan Ams will have finished competing.
