(ATR) Short track speed skating is the most popular sport for the PyeongChang Winter Games, according to the first phase of ticket sales.
Given South Korea's success in short track, that shouldn't come as a surprise. Other popular sports included figure skating, speed skating and the opening and closing ceremonies.
"The ticketing process for PyeongChang is well underway, and it is great to see the interest from the people of Korea in our most popular sports and of course the ceremonies which will be a wonderful showcase of our culture to the rest of the world," POCOG president Hee-Beom Lee said in a statement.
"All those who attended the Games 30 years ago (in Seoul) will still have strong memories, and we want as many people as possible to come to the Games next year to make memories of their own and experience something new and exciting at PyeongChang 2018."
The winners of the online ticket lottery for the first phase were announced on May 8. They have until May 21 to complete payments on their tickets.
According to Games organizers, 384,000 ticket applications were received and 162,000 tickets distributed in the first phase.
Online general sales will be available beginning Sep. 5. A total of 1.07 million tickets will be available for purchase, with 70 percent of those available domestically.
Global sponsor of the International Olympic Committee and PyeongChang Games Visa will be the only card accepted on the Olympic Games ticketing website.
