(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – The U.S. Men’s Foil Team followed its best ever World Cup result in Paris last month where the squad won gold with a second straight podium finish at the La Coruna World Cup in Spain on Sunday.
The squad of London Olympians Alexander Massialas (San Francisco, Calif.), Race Imboden (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Gerek Meinhardt (San Francisco, Calif.) and Miles Chamley-Watson (Philadelphia, Pa.) won a silver medal and moved up to #2 in the world rankings – the team’s highest ranking in history.
Following Massialas and Meinhardt’s bronze medal wins in the individual event on Saturday, the team was in medal contention after victories over Hungary, 45-40, and France, 45-41, in the first two rounds.
An injured Imboden was unable to fence the semifinal bout against Germany, but his teammates stepped up to keep the score to within a touch as they trailed Germany, 26-25, going into the final bout.
Facing four-time individual Senior World Champion Peter Joppich, Massialas not only secured the win for the Americans, but trounced Joppich, 20-6, to give Team USA the victory, 45-32.
Having left nearly everything on the strip during the previous match, the Americans were unable to hold off Italy – the reigning Olympic Champions – and lost the final match, 45-30.
The silver medal – the U.S. Men’s Foil Team’s second-best result ever at a Senior World Cup – allows the Americans to move ahead of Germany in the World Rankings.
