Weightlifting Federation Maps Out Future
The World Weightlifting Championships – the sport's primary Olympic qualifier – are underway at Disneyland Paris.
Events kicked off Friday with an opening ceremony and run through Nov. 13.
Athletes from more than 100 countries are competing across 15 weight categories, eight for men and seven for women.
The championships started with the men’s 56 kg C followed by the women’s 48 kg C.
Also in Paris, the International Weightlifting Federation awarded the 2015 worlds to Houston, Texas.
"I'm incredibly excited to bring the world championships back to the United States for the first time in almost 30 years," USA Weightlifting CEO John Duff said in a statement.
"Not only will this event be great for the athletes of today, it will no doubt inspire countless athletes of tomorrow."
Just as the Paris champs are a qualifier for London 2012, spots at Rio 2016 will be up for grabs in Houston come 2015.
In the meantime, the champs will head to Warsaw, Poland in 2013 and Astana, Kazakhstan in 2014, the IWF decided.
Bidding for FIBA Olympic Qualifiers Tournaments
Seven countries are biddingto host the FIBA Olympic qualifying tournaments.
Angola, Macedonia, Lithuania, and Venezuela submitted bids to stage the men’s tournament, which will be held July 2-8. The women’s tournament will be held June 25 to July 1 in either Argentina, the Czech Republic or Turkey.
For the first time ever, some of the countries bidding are not in Europe.
Many of the candidates have experience in hosting major basketball competitions including Turkey, host of the 2010 FIBA World Championships.
Angola also hosted Afrobasket three times and Lithuania hosted this year’s Eurobasket. Argentina organized the 2011 FIBA Americas Championship for men and Venezuela staged the 2006 South American Championship for men.
FIBA’s board will select the host countries at its Dec. 10-11 meeting in Madrid.
Afghanistan Water Polo Team Trains in California
The journey for Afghanistan’s water polo team to the Olympics will begin in a high school pool in southern California.
Corona del Mar High School in Newport Beach will host the athletes Dec. 5-18 as part of a larger initiative to develop the country’s team.
With only 13 pools in the country and freezing winters, competing in water polo is difficult in Afghanistan. The athletes will work with clubs in California to develop their skills and move towards Olympic qualification.
