UPDATE on January 15:Centro Caribe Sports presidentLuis Mejía Oviedo tells Around the Rings that the visits to Puerto Rico and El Salvador are suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

(ATR) Centro Caribe Sports confirmed that it will visit Mayagüez, Puerto Rico and San Salvador, El Salvador in the last week of January.

The organization decided to make these trips before deciding on the new venue for the Central American and Caribbean Games scheduled for 2022.

The dates were defined in the most recent virtual meeting of the CCS Executive Committee. El Salvador will be visited on January 25-26 and Puerto Rico on the following two days.

The reduced delegation of five people will be headed by the president of the regional sports organization himself, the Dominican Luis Mejía Oviedo, who will accompany the members of the Future Venues Commission.

Despite the international epidemiological situation, CCS decided to go for the face-to-face inspection of both candidates to make sure of the viability of both choices.

Analysts estimate that CCS especially seeks to meet with the main authorities and obtain from them the guarantee of formal commitment. This would send a message of tranquility for the application process after the sudden resignation of Panama last summer due to the coronavirus pandemic.

MejíaOviedo confirmed to Around the Rings the objectives of these trips, which of course will include conversations with the Olympic and sports officials of El Salvador and Puerto Rico.

"We will try, in the midst of the health situation, to visit sports infrastructures that will host the Games," said the Olympic leader of Central America and the Caribbean.

The president of the Olympic Committee of El Salvador, Eduardo Palomo, informed ATR on Tuesday that he will send CCS a draft of the agenda for the visit tomorrow.

The government of Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele supports the candidacy of San Salvador, which hosted the Central American and Caribbean Games in 1935 and 2002.

Mayagüez, located on the west coast of Puerto Rico, organized them in 2010. Puerto Rico also hosted the event in 1966 (San Juan) and 1993 (Ponce).

In the run-up to the CCS visit, the Puerto Rico Olympic Committee and the Mayagüez Foundation 2010 are collecting more data to expand the economic document that ratifies the estimates of the possible gains that the Games will report for the island's economy in the midst of the economic crisis left by the health crisis.

According to both entities, the new Governor, Pedro Pierluisi, who took office a week ago, supports the Games project.

The businessman Felipe Pérez Grajales, chair of the Mayaguez 2010 Foundation, revealed to ATR that this Wednesday they will meet with the new Secretary of Sports and former Olympic athlete Ray Quiñones and next week with the Secretary of State Larry Seilhamer.

"The meeting between Governor Pedro Pierluisi and Centro Caribe Sports is being coordinated. This week we must have the day and the time "said Pérez Grajales, who successfully led the Organizing Committee for the Games more than 10 years ago.
