The best athletes in Europe will compete at the Baku 2015 European Games thanks to the innovative approach to establish the inaugural event as a major highlight on the international sporting calendar.
The historic Games will give emerging stars the opportunity to shine in front of a global audience of millions and create new heroes amongst the next generation of athletes.
The Baku 2015 European Games has been working closely with all 49 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) across Europe ensuring a high-level of co-operation which will help create a world-class competition environment.
Senior staff from European NOCs visited Baku for the first time recently for an open day to inspect Games venues as the countdown continues to a celebration of sport that will create an exciting new sense of unity and friendship across the continent.
The NOCs have already been presented with the sport qualification criteria for the Baku 2015 European Games. In total, 19 sports will be contested at the Games and the initial draft of the sports competition schedule has also now been completed.
Athletics was the last event to be added to the event schedule with competition set to take place in the magnificent Main Stadium, which is currently under construction. The 65,000-capacity Stadium will also host the spectacular Opening and Closing Ceremonies which will celebrate the athletes’ achievements.
The two days of athletics competition will see twenty men’s and women’s events as part of the European Athletics Team Championships Third League.
The total of 600 athletes will compete across the various track and field events, and the points won will then be combined to create a final team score as they chase gold, silver and bronze.
Athletics will also offerpossible qualification standards for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
Eight sports at Baku 2015 have now been confirmed as offering Olympic qualification opportunities for Rio 2016, which will be an added incentive for competing athletes.
That achievement is testament to the vision of Patrick Hickey, International Olympic Committee board member and European Olympic Committee President, who was a driving force in making the European Games a highlight of the international sporting calendar.
The rapid progress that is being made to prepare for the Games has also led to increased global public, commercial and media interest in the event and the competitions that will take place in 20 new or refurbished competition venues in Baku.
The Broadcasting Contract for Baku 2015 has recently been awarded to International Sports Broadcasting (ISB) to serve as the host broadcaster to provide high-quality coverage for sports fans worldwide to enjoy both on television and online
ISB will produce an anticipated 1,200 hours of top-level action in high definition, including live coverage of all semi-finals and finals and a daily highlights package.
