Athletics can look forward to a positive future in Jordan, after the Jordan Olympic Committee (JOC) worked closely with the main stakeholders to resolve a dispute that had effectively frozen the sport’s development over the past four years.
A JOC-supervised election united all of the main parties behind the newly named President Saed Heiasat, who has called for the new committee to pull together to take the sport forward through to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
Athletics has been unable to develop over the past Olympic cycle due to two conflicting committees being selected, leading to the JOC coordinating with the IAAF and the two parties to find a positive solution.
Late last year, athletics was brought under an ad hoc committee headed by Nasser Majali, Secretary General of the JOC, which is linking with all of the Kingdom’s national federations to instill good governance that meets the highest of international standards.
"On behalf of the Jordan Olympic Committee and our President, HRH Prince Feisal Al Hussein, I would like to thank the IAAF, and particularly its President, Lord Sebastian Coe, for its support in helping us to bring this to a satisfying conclusion," said Majali.
"The recent Asian Junior Athletics Championships showed that we have some promising up-and-coming talent and we can now all look forward to working together for the sport to reach its potential as we continue with our ambitious national sporting strategy through to Tokyo 2020."
The newly elected President Heiasat added: "I am delighted to have been named as the new Jordan Athletics Federation President and will work closely with the Jordan Olympic Committee, as well as all parties concerned, to rebuild the sport’s reputation and re-establish Jordan as an athletics force on the Arab and Asian scene."
The Jordan Olympic Committee, headed by HRH Prince Feisal since 2002, has been supervising its post-Rio 2016 elections for its national federations throughout the spring, with just swimming, bridge and gymnastics remaining in the coming fortnight.
