(ATR) On the eve of the 2019 Summer Universiade, the FISU Executive Committee secures the host location for the 2023 edition of the games.

With a 23-0 vote, the FISU Executive Committee announced Ekaterinburg as the host city for the 32nd Summer Universiade.

"Officially we make the decision to attribute the Summer Universiade 2023 to Ekaterinburg. Congratulations," said FISU President Oleg Matytsin.

For its bid, Ekaterinburg presented itself as a "compact hub", where all 18 sports programs would take place across a total of 28 venues, with 20 of the venues currently active.

Out of the eight anticipated venues, only one would be purpose built for the Summer Universiade.

Ekaterinburg has hosted numerous sporting events and was also one of the venues for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

The Summer Universiade will incorporate FISU sports: Archery, Artistic gymnastics, athletics, badminton, basketball, diving, fencing and more.

Universiade host cities can present up to three optional sports for inclusion. Ekaterinburg's choices of boxing, rugby sevens, and sambo were approved.

Ekaterinburg will be the third Russian city over a 10 year period to host the Universiade. Kazan hosted the summer edition in 2013 and Krasnoyarsk was home to the winter version earlier this year.

The 2019 Summer Universiade will take place July 3 to July 14 in Naples, Italy. About 6,000 athletes will march into San Paulo Stadium for the opening ceremony on Wednesday. This is the event’s 60th anniversary.
