(ATR) Athletics takes center stage at the 12th African Games in Morocco.

Medals will be handed out in the women’s triple jump, men’s discus throw, men’s 3000m steeplechase and women’s 5000m on Monday, the first of five days of competition at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.

The competition has lost a few of its stars to the IAAF Diamond League competition in Zurich later this week.

The gymnastics competition begins its four-day run on Monday with 14 medal events featuring the women’s individual all-around and team finals.

South Africa dominated the swimming events which wrapped up on Saturday.

The South Africans took home 45 swimming medals, including 20 of the 23 gold medals the country has won so far.

Erin Gallagher won eight gold medals, three individual and five others while racing in relays. She also won silver medals in two other individual events.

The men’s soccer tournament is at the semifinal stage. Mali will play Nigeria and Senegal will face Burkina Faso on Tuesday. The winners play in the final on Friday, the losers will battle for the bronze medal on Thursday.

Egypt, as of this writing, was leading the medal table with 27 gold medals among a total of 85. South Africa is second with its 23 golds and 51 overall medals. The host country Morocco is third with 13 golds among a total of 41.

Algeria and Tunisia round out a top five that is dominated by North Africa.

It is a welcome homecoming for Morocco, which had not competed at the event since 1978 due to a ban imposed by the African Union tied to a longstanding territorial dispute over Western Sahara.

Morocco and the African Union signed a treaty in 2017 to allow the country back in the Games. A year later, Morocco agreed to host the event after Equatorial Guinea pulled out, citing financial problems.

More than 7,000 athletes from all 54 African nations are taking part in the Games, which include Olympic qualification in 15 disciplines among the 26 sports on the program.
