DURING FIRST WEEK OF SOCHI OLYMPICS, "NBC NIGHTLY NEWS WITH BRIAN WILLIAMS" TOPPED FIRST WEEK RATINGS OF PAST FOUR OLYMPICS

FEBRUARY 19, 2014 – During the first week of the 2014 Sochi Winter Games, as Brian Williams anchored live from the Olympic Park in Sochi, Russia, "NBC Nightly News" averaged 11.6 million total viewers – topping the first week averages of the past four Olympics (London, Vancouver, Beijing, and Torino). Nightly posted solid total viewer gains versus its Winter Olympics week #1 deliveries in both Vancouver (+5%, or +506,000) and Torino (+14%, or +1,460,000). This marks Nightly’s best total viewer delivery since the week of January 3, 2005.

According to Nielsen Media Research data, the NBC broadcast delivered its best total viewer and key demo advantages over ABC since the London Olympics (week of 8/6/12).

Season-to-date, Nightly is averaging the highest growth among total viewers (+620,000) and has widened its total viewer lead over ABC by +46% year-to-year. Nightly is currently posting its biggest audience (9.461 million) to start a season since the 2005-06 season and its largest advantage over ABC World News (+1,143,000) since the 2010-11 season.

Weekly Highlights:

-Nightly delivered 11.609 million total viewers, +2,770,000 more than ABC World News’ 8.839 million and +3,658,000 more than CBS Evening News’ 7.951 million.

-Nightly averaged a 7.5/14 Household rating, ahead of ABC’s 5.8/10 and CBS’ 5.2/10.

-Nightly averaged over 10 million viewers for the 4th consecutive week and has topped ABC by at least one million total viewers in 12 of the last 15 weeks.

-Nightly delivered a 2.7 A25-54 rating, +7 tenths ahead of ABC’s 2.0 and +9 tenths more than CBS’s 1.8 rating.

-Among A25-54 (000), Nightly averaged 3.180 million viewers, +790,000 ahead of World News’ 2.390 million, and +1,058,000 ahead of Evening News’ 2.122 million.

This marks Nightly’s best A25-54 delivery since the London Olympics (week of 8/6/12).

Trends:

-Nightly has won in total viewers for 231 consecutive weeks, and in 278 of the past 279 weeks.

-Nightly has won in viewers A25-54 for 272 of the past 273 weeks.
