(ATR) Just five days before the bid is to be approved, Durban’s bid to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games has received government approval.
The bid was approved by the Cabinet of South Africa on Friday. The bid "will position South Africa as a sport tourism destination and also provide opportunities for Team South Africa," according to a government statement.
Durban has been the only bidder since Edmonton dropped its bid in February.
It will be the first Commonwealth Games for Africa. The country’s biggest event to date was the men’s edition of the FIFA World Cup in 2010, an event whose infrastructure will be re-purposed for the 2022 event, the government says.
The event is expected to bring $1.5 billion into the economy, translation to about $800 million in addition gross domestic product.
The Commonwealth Games were last hosted by Glasgow last summer. Gold Coast, Australia welcomes the event in 2018.
