(ATR) With the Asian Games coming in two months to Doha, trial balloons for a 2016 Olympics bid from Qatar are being launched.
Reuters quotes an unidentified official with the Qatar National Olympic Committee who says "we want to be one of the candidate cities for the 2016 Games."
For those hopes to become reality, a successful Asian Games in December is a prerequisite.
While more than $4 billion has been spent on sports venues and other infrastructure needed for the Asian Games, it remains to be seen how the organization of the event is carried out.
With 39 sports and nearly 10,000 athletes and officials, the Doha Asian Games will test the capacity of the smallest nation ever to host the event. Qatar's population is just over 800,000.
Many workers for the games have been recruited from abroad and the DAGOC website is still carrying employment advertisments.
Doha, the capital, is a boom town, with high rise hotels and offices becoming a trademark of the city. Along with construction for the Asian Games, Qatar's economic growth has been fueled by its substantial natural gas reserves.
Qatar has one IOC member, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani, who at 26 is the youngest IOC member. Under current rules that call for retirement at age 70, Al-Thani could serve for nearly 50 years. He was elected to the IOC four years ago.
Doha will have a chance to display its preparations to the leaders of the IOC in December for the open of the Asian Games. The IOC Executive Board meets in Kuwait at the end of November and then will travel to Qatar for the opening ceremony on December 1 and the first days of competition.
